     Sidney Charles Smith was born on 6 Mar 1910 in Debenham, Suffolk, England.2 He was the son of Charles Smith and Florence Godfrey Taylor.1 His birth was registered in the Jun 1910 quarter in the Bosmere registration district.3 Sidney Charles Smith was baptized on 14 Jul 1910 in St. Mary Magdalene, Debenham, Suffolk, England.4 The marriage of Sidney Charles Smith and Rosie Cicely Smith was registered in the Dec 1932 quarter in the Plomesgate registration district.5 As of 17 Dec 1932, Sidney Charles Smith lived at Debenham, Suffolk, England.6 He married Rosie Cicely Smith, daughter of Samuel George Smith and Minnie Catherine Davis Smith, on 17 Dec 1932 in The Register Office, Plomesgate, Suffolk, England. Witnesses were Dorothy Mabel Smith and Frederick T Potter.6 As of 15 Oct 1938, Sidney Charles Smith and Rosie Cicely Smith lived at Cross Greens, Debenham, Suffolk, England.7 On 5 Jul 1941 in SS Anselm The SS Anselm was built in 1935 as a passenger ship. She was owned by the Booth Steamship Co., but was requisitioned by the Admiralty as a troop tranport early in 1940.

At 08:29 on the morning of 5th July 1941, U-96 fired 4 torpedoes, 2 of which hit the SS Anselm, which sunk within 22 minutes.     The explosion damaged the ladders leading to the hold, containing the RAF and RAOC personnel.8 On 5 Jul 1941 in U-96 The U-Boat, U-96, was commissioned on 14th September 1940 and placed under the command of Kptlt. Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock (Knights Cross), who commanded her until 1st April 1942. In total U-96 hit 32 ships, sinking 28 and damaging 4 ships. One of those sunk was the SS Anselm.8 Sidney Charles Smith died on 5 Jul 1941 in off the Azores at age 31; lost in S.S. Anselm (Liverpool), during WW2.1 He has no known burial place, and is commemorated on a Commonwealth War Memorial on Brookwood Memorial, Surrey, England; Panel 19. Column 2.1
